A review of the Gelart Xtra - the all in one Children's
Standing & Seating System
Wheelchair

Back to Full List <<<
Back to Pediatric / children's Powered Electric Wheelchairs <<<

This is a very interesting chair. I suggest if you are serious about it you contact a dealer or look at the manufacturers website. In the meantime here is some info copied from there.  I would welcome a user review of this device as usual!

Gelart Xtra is a seating/standing system developed for children with movement disorders such as cerebral palsy and spina bifida. Such children have varying levels of difficulty with strength, balance and coordination, which in turn leads to the development of abnormal posture and movement. Left unchecked, these abnormal patterns can negatively influence development of the child’s muscular and skeletal system, eventually causing fixed deformity, which further impacts on the child’s functional abilities.

Gelart Xtra has been developed to allow the therapist to tailor the equipment to help these physically challenged children in developing and improving their seating and standing capabilities. Gelart Xtra will encourage optimal development of the muscular and skeletal system while at the same time enhancing and improving function.

Gelart Xtra is the first product in the world to be developed exclusively for small children between the ages of 1 and 8 which can be used as a high to low seating system and converted into a prone or upright stander. Behind this design lies more than three years of research and development addressing not only the physical and psychological needs of the child but also the needs of the therapist, the parents, the teachers, and the funding authorities.

Experienced international paediatric therapists have already welcomed this innovative product which allows active management of the child’s needs from an early age .A further advantage of Gelart Xtra is that the system can be used for other therapeutic considerations such as long sitting, postural drainage, anterior tilt seating, as well as growth guidance in both seating and standing. The Design Team also recognised the need for the unit to be fully and easily adjustable for growth and this is achieved with only one tool.

However, no tools are required for everyday conversion from sitting to standing and the child can be tilted in space and moved up and down with little effort with the assistance of gas struts .The ability to raise the child to share their meals with the family or to lower them for play or to interact with their peers is as important psychologically as it is to sit or stand the child correctly physiologically.

Parents and teachers will appreciate the small amount of floor space this multi-functional product takes up at home or in the classroom; this is achieved by the development of a unique self-centring tilting system, which minimizes the chassis length. Gelârt Xtra can also be separated into two pieces and lies flat for storage or transport.

Gelart Xtra – All in One, is designed to minimize the cost and duplication of so much equipment within the home and school, embracing a new standard of caring and comfort for children with special needs, whilst retaining the ability to compliment and enhance proven therapeutic practices.

As the system can move Hi 2 Lo the child can be raised to normal table height to eat with the family or lowered to peer level, with the assistance of gas struts enclosed in the frame.

Gelart Xtra is fully adjustable and will grow with the child between the approximate ages of 1 to 8.

There is no need to use tools when moving from standing to sitting, however ONE size allen key (supplied) is required when adjustment is being made to accommodate the child's growth.

How long does it take to change the system from standing to
Sitting?    Depending on the complexities of the child's needs, the transition should take just a few minutes. The operation is user friendly and requires no tools. Full and illustrated instructions accompany each product

What other features does it have?    Gelârt Xtra has been designed to assist the therapist to accommodate the child's complex seating and standing needs. To achieve this, the product may be adjusted by the therapist in many phases, including:

Footrest and foot angle
Independent shoe holder
Leg length and leg angle
Knee blocks in sitting and standing
Seat depth, width and angle of seat to back
Pommel, pelvis control, back height, sacral positioning cushion
Lateral pads and safety straps
Head rest
Tray, tiltable and removable

It does so much more than any other product on the market - Is it bigger and heavier?    During the three years that we spent designing Gelart Xtra, we were very conscious of the limited space and needs in the classroom and home. Gelart Xtra replaces up to six different products and because of its growth potential, can eliminate the need to buy several replacements as the child grows. The chassis folds flat, is 810mm x 610mm and weighs approx 12 kilos. The seating/standing system can be separated quickly without tools and weighs approx 14 kilo. (Lightweight buggies for special needs children may weigh upwards of 10 kilos.)
