The iBOT 4000 Powerchair
Conclusion / Latest!
Just got off the
phone with Ola Abou-sabe who is the big boss lady of
Independence Technology in the good old USA.
She called me
actually, out of the blue. It seems that they are
stopping sales in the UK for financial reasons, meaning the
government wont pay, wheelchair services wont supply, and
the market is very small.
The interesting
thing is that she has seen these pages and intends to use
these suggestions when further developing the iBOT in the
US. It may later on be sold here in the UK I think she
said...
Now since I really
still want one even with its problems the fact that they are
going to be developing it further is very promising!
Now she tells me
that I am welcome to buy one in the US anyway, and that
parts for maintenance will be available "for the service
life" of the iBOT 4000. Whatever that means. If
it means 3 years as a definition of service life as agencies
like the UK Wheelchair Services do, then its not
enough. I expect to be looking after and using mine
ten years from now. Without replacement parts that's
not possible. So the important bit here was THEIR
definition of "service life" and "Product life" She
didn't elaborate...
She also tells me
that I can buy most parts to service and maintain myself.
Slightly different to what the Rep told me! But not
all parts. Some complex bits they insist on
maintaining. Their definition of complex may not be
mine! So again, EXACTLY which bits do they insist on
both fitting, servicing, and not providing? This needs
clarification. I may need a motor in 3 years time! Or
whatever widget broke!
These TWO thing
need to be addressed in detail. Without detail it is
not possible to decide if buying one now here in the UK is a
bad idea or not!
As a plus, she did
say that they didn't mind if I modified it, but that I would
lose my warranty! Like I care! OK then so now
what!!!
